What do I need to bring to my Notary, Loan Signing, or Live Scan appointment?

You’ll need a valid, government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, passport, or military ID. The ID must be current (not expired) and include your photo, signature, and physical description.

What is a Jurat certificate?

A jurat is used when a signer swears to the truth of a document’s contents. The notary must administer an oath or affirmation and witness the signer’s signature. The jurat wording “subscribed and sworn to before me” confirms that the document was signed (“subscribed”) and an oath or affirmation was given (“sworn”) in the notary’s presence (“before me”).

California notaries cannot choose the notarial certificate for a signer, as that would be practicing law.  A notary public may only ask which form the signer wants; if the signer is unsure, the signer must contact the document’s originator.

What is an Acknowledgement?

An acknowledgement verifies the signer’s identity and confirms they willingly signed the document. The signer is not swearing to its truthfulness. In California, the signer doesn’t have to sign in front of the notary but must personally appear to confirm their signature.

Live Scan is a digital fingerprinting process used for background checks. Your fingerprints are captured electronically and securely transmitted to the California DOJ and, if required, the FBI.
